There's nary an episode of the series that's absent absurdity.
The show even cleverly toys around with live-action segments that add quite a bit of quirkiness and zest to the narrative. The show has also helped further shape 2-D animation, keeping it alive in a time where CG is highly favored, even on TV. And like it or not, if Ren & Stimpy helped pave the way for SpongeBob SquarePants then SpongeBob's success in turn helped, in some way, shape the quirky animation styles and narrative tones of several hit shows on both Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. Who knew the series would become a major figurehead of its network, Nickelodeon, a station that felt less and less relevant heading into the 2000s – an era where Comedy Central and Cartoon Network were gaining momentum. Sure, the show isn't quite as snappy or outlandish as the cult series Ren & Stimpy, but it's loaded with hilarious characters, funny stories and madcap humor fit for all generations. I replied that the series sounded like Ren & Stimpy underwater, to which my friend exclaimed, "Exactly!"įrom then on, I was a casual fan of SpongeBob SquarePants, watching episodes whenever I flipped past one on TV, and even collecting a few compilation DVDs, back before season-long box sets were the norm. Shocked that I didn't know who the figure was she confusingly replied, "That's SpongeBob." For the next 15 minutes the normal adult topics we typically discussed ceased while my friend gave me, and others curious, a hefty run-through of the goofy little "children's" series – which hadn't quite hit its stride at this point.

Amidst the somewhat deep conversation and debate that often sparked during these fun gatherings, I inquired about a small yellow sponge that was sitting on top my friends' TV amidst her collection sea shells and other aquatic memorabilia. I was working at a sea-themed amusement park in Ohio and was spending the 5th of July (holidays at parks like these are out of the question) with a few animal trainers, show techs and colleagues. I still remember my goofy introduction to the show. It's hard to think back to a time when he wasn't swimming around the Nickelodeon network, making live appearances in malls and serving us burgers. And yet SpongeBob feels like he's always been a piece of modern pop culture. It seems like yesterday that the series first premiered. It's kind of hard to believe that SpongeBob SquarePants is now 10 years old.
